The Persian Version, 2023's winner of Sundance's Audience Award and Screenwriting Award, tells the story of 3 generations of an Iranian-American family currently living in New York. This big, messy, dysfunctional family of 7 sons and one daughter banter like only a family can. But amongst the laughs and retro 80s dance numbers come revelations of carefully guarded secrets that prove that the family members are not as unalike as they had once believed. Writer-director Maryam Keshavarz, who has been banned from returning to Iran because of previous films' content, wanted to make a film filled with joy as a counterpoint to so much of the hateful political rhetoric both in Iran and the US. Keshavarz strongly believes that "no regime can extinguish joy," and this hilarious comedy goes a long way toward empowering understanding and empathy. 107 minutes

History of the Quinte Film Alternative:
In 1995 about a dozen people responded to an ad in the Community Press. Everyone was a film enthusiast who held many meetings to come up with the name Quinte Film Alternative, got recognized by the Toronto International Film Festival, negotiated with the Bellestar 3 theatre and then chose their first film, BLUE IN THE FACE, screened in January 1996.
The QFA membership model assured financial stability and continuity from year to year so films could be booked in advance and promoted. Over the years our venues changed from the Bellestar to a theatre in the Quinte Mall which was superseded by the Famous Players 8 (now the Cineplex Galaxy).
In 2002 Mark Rashotte restored the downtown McCarthy Theatre and invited QFA to be a permanent tenant in his Empire Theatre. Some years later QFA contributed to the installation of the high-quality digital projector enhancing even more the joy of a theatrical experience.
Visit quintefilmalternative.ca for details on first-run, festival quality, must-see cinema, presented at 2 and 7 pm on alternate Wednesdays.
